Born: September 10, 1834, London
Died January 13, 1895. British historian, Cambridge. Graduated from Cambridge University. Became professor of Latin at the University of London in 1863. In 1865 he published Ecce Homo, a book about Christ as a man, which provoked a great response and controversy. In 1869 he became professor of modern history at Cambridge, a position he held for the rest of his life. In 1894 he was knighted. The Life and Times of Stein (1878) and The Expansion of England (83) are compilations of his lectures at Cambridge, and posthumously The Growth of British Policy (95) and Lectures on Political Science (95) were published.
