It is also called red mica or lithia mica. It is a type of mica that contains lithium as the main component, and is a solid solution of trilithiomica and polylithiomica. It can crystallize as hexagonal plates, but is usually found in large pale purple chunks as an aggregation of very fine scale-like crystals. It is found in granitic pegmatites with quartz, lithia tourmaline, lithia pyroxene, montblanc, cassiterite, hafnium-containing zircon, and ferrotantalite, and is sometimes mined as a source of lithium. In Japan, the main production areas are Nagatare, Fukuoka (both trilithiomica and polylithiomica are found), and Myoken-san, Hitachiota City, Ibaraki Prefecture (trilithiomica), but it is not produced in large quantities, and all that is for industrial use is imported. Large production areas around the world are known to be Zimbabwe, Namibia, the United States, Brazil, Australia, and Madagascar. The English name comes from the Greek word meaning scales.

紅雲母(べにうんも)あるいはリチア雲母ともいう。リチウムを主成分とする雲母の一種で、トリリシオ雲母とポリリシオ雲母のつくる固溶体をいう。六角板状の結晶をすることもあるが、普通、非常に細かい鱗片状の結晶の集合として淡紫色の大きな塊で産する。花崗(かこう)岩質ペグマタイトに、石英、リチア電気石、リチア輝石、モンブラ石、錫(すず)石、ハフニウムを含むジルコン、鉄タンタル石などと産し、リチウムの原料として採掘されることがある。日本では、福岡市長垂(ながたれ)（トリリシオ雲母とポリリシオ雲母の両方がある）、茨城県常陸太田(ひたちおおた)市妙見山（トリリシオ雲母）が主産地であるが、多量にはなく、工業用のものはすべて輸入されている。世界的な大産地は、ジンバブエ、ナミビア、アメリカ合衆国、ブラジル、オーストラリア、マダガスカルなどに知られる。英名は鱗(うろこ)を意味するギリシア語に由来。
