Iba clan

Japanese: 伊庭氏 - いばうじ

A military commander since the early period of the Northern and Southern Courts. His main residence was Iba-sho, Kanzaki County, Omi Province (Notogawa Town, Shiga Prefecture). The Sasaki clan, the guardian of Omi, incorporated into their family a branch of the Sasaki Kiyama clan, who had been indigenous to the area before the Sasaki clan entered the country, and formed the Omi samurai group. The Iba clan was founded by Sanetaka, the second son of Sasaki Yukizane, who was descended from the Sasaki Kiyama clan and was known as Toyoura no Kanja. From the early period of the Northern and Southern Courts to the Sengoku period, he was active in both military and administrative affairs as a senior vassal of the Rokkaku clan. In particular, in the latter half of the Muromachi period, from around Eikyo, he began to overwhelm other vassals as deputy guardians.

南北朝初期以来の武将。近江国神崎郡伊庭庄(滋賀県能登川町)を本貫地とする。近江の守護家佐々木氏は，その入国以前から土着していた佐々貴山公氏の一族庶流を家門に包摂し，近江武士団を形成していった。伊庭氏は，佐々貴山公氏の流れで豊浦冠者と称された佐々木行実の次男実高を祖とする。南北朝初期から戦国期まで，六角氏の重臣として代々軍事･行政両方面に活躍した。とくに室町期の後半，永享ごろから守護代として他の家臣を圧倒するようになる。
