Order Rodentia, Family Pocket Muridae, Genus Perognathus (Pocket Mouse) A general term for mammals belonging to the Perognathus genus, with 25 species including the desert pocket mouse P. penicillatus (illustration) found in the lowlands of the Midwest from Washington State to Mexico. They are closely related to kangaroo rats, but do not move by jumping on their hind two legs, but walk on all fours.
