German composer and organist. After studying music in his hometown of Halle, he studied under Sweelinck in Amsterdam in 1608. From 1609 to 1630, he served as court organist, court conductor, and musical director in Halle. He had connections with Schein and Praetorius, and continued to be a representative composer of early German Baroque music. In his representative work, the third volume of the organ collection Neue Staats (1624), he changed the written notation for keyboard instruments used in Germany at the time to Italian-style staff notation for parts, which had a groundbreaking impact on the development of German organ music. In addition, his sacred vocal music, which combined the traditional motet style with the new Italian style, occupies an important position as it paved the way for the later church cantata (cantata).

ドイツの作曲家，オルガン奏者。生地ハレで音楽を学んだのち，1608年アムステルダムでスウェーリンクの教えを受ける。翌1609年−1630年ハレで宮廷オルガン奏者，宮廷楽長，音楽監督を歴任。シャイン，プレトリウスらと交流し，ドイツ初期バロック音楽の代表的作曲家として活動を続けた。代表作として知られるオルガン曲集《新譜表》（1624年）第３巻では，当時ドイツで用いられていた鍵盤(けんばん)楽器用の文字記譜法をイタリア式の五線譜によるパート譜に改め，ドイツ・オルガン音楽の発展に画期的な影響を及ぼした。また，伝統的なモテット様式とイタリアの新様式を結合した宗教的声楽曲は，のちの教会カンタータ（カンタータ）への道を開いたものとして重要な位置を占める。
