Face bright - Ganki

Date of birth and death unknown. Chinese painter from the early Yuan Dynasty. Born in Jiangshan, Zhejiang Province. His courtesy name was Qiu Yue. He was skilled in painting demons, gods, monkeys, and other creatures, and was also good at Taoist and Buddhist figures. Although there is no detailed biography, he was a court painter who painted murals at a Taoist temple in Jizhou (Jiangxi Province) during the Daitoku era (1297-1307). One of his works that is said to be his original is the pair of "Toad Iron Flies" paintings at Chion-ji Temple in Kyoto. This painting is one of the most representative of Taoist and Buddhist paintings from the Yuan Dynasty, and is highly skilled in depicting the strange appearances in detail, using thick and thin lines for the folds of the clothing, and using strong expressions with strong shadows. In addition, the dark color scheme expresses a mysterious atmosphere with dignity, creating a mysterious style not seen in Song Dynasty paintings. The "Hanzan Jittokuzu" at the Tokyo National Museum is also known as a masterpiece, said to be the work of Yan Hui.

生没年不詳。中国、元代前半期の画家。浙江(せっこう)省江山の人。字(あざな)は秋月。鬼神や猿などに妙技を発揮し、また道釈人物画を得意とした。詳しい伝記はわからないが、宮廷の画家として大徳年間（1297～1307）吉州（江西省）の道観に壁画を描いている。正筆とされる作品に京都・知恩寺の『蝦蟇鉄拐図(がまてっかいず)』双幅がある。この画は元の道釈画を代表するものの一つで、高度の技量をもって、怪異な風貌(ふうぼう)を精緻(せいち)に描き、衣文(えもん)には肥痩(ひそう)のある描線を用い、陰影を濃厚にした強烈な表現を用いている。また暗い色調のうちに怪奇な雰囲気が品格をもって表されており、宋(そう)画にはみられない神秘的な一画風が形成されている。なお、東京国立博物館の『寒山拾得図(かんざんじっとくず)』も顔輝筆と伝えるものの傑作として知られる。
