In Greek mythology, Niobe is the daughter of Tantalus. She was the wife of Amphion, a master of the lyre, and the couple had seven sons and seven daughters, or ten sons and ten daughters, or six sons and six daughters. Niobe was blessed with many children, and boasted that she was superior to Leto, who only had one son and one daughter, Apollo and Artemis, with Zeus. In anger, Leto sought revenge on her children, and Apollo shot and killed Niobe's son and Artemis shot and killed her daughter. One theory is that her father, Amphion, was also shot and killed at the same time. Her mother, Niobe, turned into a stone in grief, and the stone is said to be on Mount Cyprus in Lydia. Alternatively, Niobe fled to Mount Cyprus, where her father Tantalus lived, and cried there and turned into a stone. It is said that the stone remained on the mountain until later times, and Pausanias and others wrote in his Greeks that they had actually seen it. The legend of Niobe has been used repeatedly in literature since Homer, and her child, Niobe, is often depicted in vase paintings and statues as being shot by Apollo and Artemis.
