Also called rods. Light-sensing cells in the outermost layer of the retina, just inside the pigment epithelium. They consist of rod cells and rod fibers. The outer segments of rods contain a lot of the pigment rhodopsin (visual red). While cones are responsible for color vision, rods are said to sense light and dark. There are far more rods than cones in the peripheral part of the retina, but as you approach the macula, the relationship reverses and they gradually become less numerous. 杆体ともいう。網膜の最外層で色素上皮のすぐ内側にある光を感受する細胞。杆状体細胞と杆状体線維とから成る。杆状体の外節にはロドプシン (視紅) という色素が多く含まれる。錐状体が色覚をもつのに対し,杆状体は明暗を感じるといわれる。杆状体は網膜周辺部では錐状体よりはるかに多いが,黄斑に近づくにつれ,その関係は逆になって次第に少くなる。
