Retinal rods

Japanese: 杆状体 - かんじょうたい(英語表記)retinal rods
Retinal rods
Also called rods. Light-sensing cells in the outermost layer of the retina, just inside the pigment epithelium. They consist of rod cells and rod fibers. The outer segments of rods contain a lot of the pigment rhodopsin (visual red). While cones are responsible for color vision, rods are said to sense light and dark. There are far more rods than cones in the peripheral part of the retina, but as you approach the macula, the relationship reverses and they gradually become less numerous.
