...Their duties were divided into many subdivisions covering general city administration, such as the Nenbankata (year guard), the Inmikata (police in charge of trials), the Reikurikata (case-checking criminal precedents), the Jōya Mimawari (prison watchdog), the Kōcho Senyokata (pardoning and pardoning officers), the Machibikeshi Ninshoku-arai (town fire brigade), the Yojōsho Mimawari (courtesy watchdog), the Honjōkata (honjō Fukagawa) and the Fuuretsu Mimawari (wind and wind watchdog), as well as the courts and police. Among them, the Inmikata Yoriki (10 people) was a high-ranking official who actually carried out the court cases of the Machibōgyō on behalf of the Machibōgyō. Along with the Hyojōshō Tomeyaku (courtesy watchdog) under the Kanjōgyō, they played a major role in the development of the Machibōgyō law as the central players in the courts of the shogunate. Therefore, they were often asked by various feudal domains to instruct them on the contents of these laws and to use them as reference, which was one of the opportunities to encourage the conversion of feudal domain laws into feudal domain laws.

…その職掌は役所全般を取り締まる年番方（ねんばんかた），裁判を行う吟味方，刑事判例を調べる例繰方（れいくりかた），牢屋の事務を監督する牢屋見廻（みまわり），恩赦を扱う赦帳撰要方，町火消を指揮する町火消人足改，小石川養生所を扱う養生所見廻，本所深川に関する事務を行う本所方，烈風のとき市中を見回り警戒する風烈見廻等や，裁判，警察を中心に，市政一般にわたる多くの分課に分かれた。なかでも吟味方与力(定員10名)は重職で，町奉行に代わって町奉行所の裁判を実際に遂行したのであり，勘定奉行配下の評定所留役（ひようじようしよとめやく）と並んで，幕府裁判の中心的担い手として，幕府法の発達に大きく寄与した。したがってまた彼らは，幕府法の内容を探知し参考にしようとする諸藩からの依頼を受けて，幕府法を教示することも多く，藩法の幕府法化を促す契機の一つともなった。…
