Ahmad Shawqi (English spelling)

[Modern and contemporary literature]
Modern literature has flourished under three schools: the Neoclassical school, which aimed to revive classical literature, the Romantic school, which opposed this and sought modernization from a liberal standpoint, and the Socialist Realist school, which was based on a popular base. The Neoclassical school wrote some prose novels in the Maqamat style, such as Muḥammad al-Muwayliḥī's (1868-1930) Isa bin Hisham, but placed greater emphasis on poetry, and ideas of pan-Islamism and Arab nationalism were expressed in the qasida style by such writers as al-Bārūdī (1839-1904) and Ahmad Shawqi (d. 1932). In the Romantic movement, Muḥammad Ḥusayn Haykal (1888-1956) published the first novel in the history of Arab literature, Zainab, in 1913.
