Byzantine clergyman and classical scholar from c. 860 to after 932. Born in Patrai, Greece, he became archbishop of Caesarea, Cappadocia, in c. 907. He was one of the disciples of Photius, archbishop of Constantinople and a central figure in the 9th-century Byzantine revival of ancient Greek literature. Aretas was an avid collector of manuscripts by ancient writers and attempted to annotate their works, both pagan and Christian. He also commissioned masters to copy ancient manuscripts, including the oldest surviving Byzantine minuscule manuscripts, including Euclid's mathematical works, Christian apologetics by Clement of Alexandria and Eusebius, Aristides' oratory works, and Plato's dialogues.

ビザンティンの聖職者，古典学者。ギリシアのパトライに生まれ，907年ころカッパドキアのカエサレアの大主教となった。コンスタンティノープルの大主教であり，9世紀ビザンティンにおける古代ギリシア文芸復興に中心的役割を果たしたフォティオスの高弟の一人。アレタスは熱心に古代文人たちの写本を集め，異教･キリスト教の別を問わず，作品注釈を試みた。また彼は名筆家たちに古写本の筆写を委嘱し，その中にはユークリッドの数学書，アレクサンドリアのクレメンスやエウセビオスらのキリスト教護教論，アリステイデスの弁論集，プラトンの対話集などの，現存する最古のビザンティン小文字写本が含まれている。
