synagogue (English spelling)

…the term refers to a place of public prayer and worship in Judaism (synagogue). It comes from the Greek word synagōge, meaning "assembly," and in Hebrew it is called beit knesset (bet ^knesset ). There are various theories about its origin, but the most widely accepted theory is that it developed as a place of public prayer for the Jews during the Babylonian captivity after the fall of the Kingdom of Judah in 586 BCE, to replace the temple in Jerusalem (the First Temple), which was burned down.
