…English actor. In 1814, he played Shylock in The Merchant of Venice at Drury Lane, not as a comic villain as he had done in the past, but as a deranged villain, and gained a reputation for it. A Romantic actor with a talent for explosive passionate expression, Byron and Coleridge were his admirers. He excelled in Shakespeare's tragic villains, such as Richard III, Macbeth, and Iago in Othello, but was not good at noble roles such as Hamlet or comedic roles. He grew up an orphan and joined a traveling troupe, but as an adult he was known for his drinking habits and eccentric behavior, which drew public criticism. …
