...Population 725 (1995). The island is mountainous, with Akamayama (227m) in the north as its highest point, and the central settlement of Tokashiki is on the east coast. Before World War II, it supplied firewood and charcoal to Naha, and was also a thriving fishing area for skipjack tuna from the South Sea Islands.
