A collection of linked verse poems from the mid-Muromachi period. Compiled by Sogi. Completed in 1476 (Bunmei 8). Sogi selected seven people as masters of linked verse in the "recent age" - Sozei, Soi (Sugihara Katamori), Shinkei, Gyojo, Senjun, Chiun (Ninagawa Chikamasa), and Noa - and likened them to the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Forest in China, and collected and compiled their works. There are some variations in the various editions, but the largest edition has a total of 1,837 verses (including 288 hokku verses). The authors with the most verses included are Shinkei, Sozei, and Senjun. Kaneyoshi Ichijo wrote a preface explaining the circumstances of the work's creation. The style of the poems is said to be centered on the mysterious and mysterious verses favored by Sogi, but there are also many strong verses characteristic of non-aristocratic jige renga.
