Japanese: イノシシ(猪) - イノシシ（英語表記）wild boar

A mammal of the Suidae family in the order Artiodactyla (illustration). It is also called the European boar or Eurasian wild boar. It is widely distributed in Europe and Asia, and was introduced to North America for hunting purposes and has become established there. It lives in forests and shrubs from plains to altitudes of 4000m. It is also said to be the ancestor of pigs. Japanese wild boars are generally divided into two subspecies: the Japanese wild boar S. s . leucomystax found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and the Ryukyu wild boar S. s . riukiuanus found on Amami Oshima and Okinawa.

偶蹄目イノシシ科の哺乳類（イラスト）。ヨーロッパイノシシ，ユーラシアイノシシともいわれる。ヨーロッパとアジアに広く分布し，北アメリカには狩猟用に移入されたものが定着している。平地から標高4000mまでの森林や低木林にすむ。ブタの祖先ともいわれている。日本のイノシシはふつう本州，四国，九州のニホンイノシシS.s.leucomystax，奄美大島と沖縄のリュウキュウイノシシS.s.riukiuanusの2亜種に区別される。
