...This period coincides with the time when the Japanese diet shifted from brown rice or half-polished rice to highly polished white rice. There are also records of epidemics in Kyoto during the Kansei era (1789-1801) and in Osaka during the Bunka era (1804-1818), where they were called "Edo wazai" (Edo trouble) or "Osaka tsurure" (Osaka swelling). With the rapid increase in urban population and the rise in poverty in the Meiji era, the decline in dietary habits, especially among young people, became more pronounced, leading to a sharp increase in beriberi cases.
