Kisewata - Kisewata

A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family (APG classification: Lamiaceae) that grows in mountain grasslands. The stems are square and upright, 40 to 1 meter tall. The leaves are opposite, short-stalked, ovate, coarsely hairy, 5 to 9 centimeters long, and have coarse sawtooth edges. The flowers grow in clusters in the axils at the top of the stems from August to September; they are pale pink-purple, bilabial, and 2.5 to 3 centimeters long. The outer surface is covered with white hairs, giving the flower the appearance of being covered in cotton, the kind used to cover things, hence the name kisewata. The calyx is divided into five parts, and the lobes are sharp and prickly. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, Korea, and China.

シソ科（APG分類：シソ科）の多年草で、山の草地に生える。茎は方形で直立し、高さ40センチメートルから1メートル。葉は対生し、短い柄があり、卵形で全体に粗い毛があり、長さ5～9センチメートル、縁に粗い鋸歯(きょし)がある。花は8～9月ごろ茎上部の葉腋(ようえき)に集まってつき、淡紅紫色、二唇形で長さ2.5～3センチメートル。外面は白毛が多く、物の上にかぶせる綿、すなわち着せ綿で花が覆われたようにみえるのでキセワタの名がある。萼(がく)は5裂し、裂片は鋭い刺(とげ)状。北海道から九州、朝鮮、中国に分布する。
