...The eunuchs of ancient Persia and the Orient also served as guardians of the harem. These Sumerian castrated slaves were called amal qud (castrated bulls), which originally referred to tamed castrated bulls used for farming. In the Mediterranean region, castrated and trained male rams have been used since ancient times to control the behavior of sheep flocks that tend to follow the herds. The role of the eunuchs as intermediates between the herdsmen and the herds they managed, and who obeyed the herdsmen's commands, is similar to that of eunuchs, who acted as intermediaries between the ruler and the people and conveyed the will of the ruler.
