Japanese: 物売 - ものうり

A person who sells goods on the street. In the early modern period, there were two types of sellers: Furiuri, who moved around selling goods by carrying them on their hands or shoulders, and Tachiuri, who sold without moving and set up a shop on a main street or in the precincts of a shrine or temple. Furiuri are also called Botefuri, and there are various types: those who put goods in a packing box or basket and carry it on a pole (fish sellers, sake sellers, tofu sellers, etc.), those who sell goods by hand (sugoroku sellers, treasure ship sellers, calendar sellers, etc.), those who carry goods on a platform (primrose sellers, plant sellers, etc.), those who carry a box (medicine sellers), those who sell from a stall with a checkered roof (insect sellers), and those who sell goods by putting them on a Benkei (pot beater). There were various types of vendors, including vendors who carried goods on their heads (flower sellers, ground cherries sellers), vendors carrying umbrellas (candy sellers), vendors who carried boxes containing goods on their backs (brush and ink sellers, raoya), vendors who carried boxes on their shoulders (bean sellers), vendors who carried boxes around their necks (dango sellers, soap bubble sellers), vendors who carried small boxes with drawers in their hands (tobacco sellers, toothpaste sellers), vendors who carried goods on their heads (female fish sellers), and vendors who carried boxes on one shoulder (sushi sellers).

街頭で商品を売る者のことで，近世には品物を手や肩にかけて移動しながら売り歩く振売と，大道や神社仏閣の境内などに見世（みせ）を出し移動せずに商売する立売とがあった。振売は〈棒手振（ぼてふり）〉ともいい，荷箱や荷ざるに品物を入れ天秤棒（てんびんぼう）で担ぐもの(魚売，酒売，豆腐売など)，商品を手で持って売るもの(双六（すごろく）売，宝船売，暦売など)，台輪に商品を載せて担ぐもの(桜草売，植木売など)，挟み箱を担ぐもの(薬売)，市松模様の屋根の屋台で売るもの(虫売)，弁慶に差して売るもの(鉢たたき，つくり花売，ほおずき売)，傘をさした物売(飴売)，品物を入れた箱を背負った物売(筆墨売，羅宇屋（らおや）)，箱を肩にかけた物売(お豆さん売)，箱を首にかけたもの(だんご売，しゃぼん玉売)，引出し付の小箱を手でさげて売りにくるもの(煙草売，歯磨売)，品物を頭にのせてくる物売(女の魚売)，箱を片方の肩に担ぐもの(鮨売)などがあった。
