Nanban chickweed - Nanban chickweed

Japanese:
Nanban chickweed - Nanban chickweed

A perennial plant of the Caryophyllaceae family (APG classification: Caryophyllaceae). The stems grow well, branching and reaching a length of 1.5 meters, and become vine-like, leaning against other plants. The leaves are ovate and 2-5 cm long. From summer to autumn, white flowers grow singly at the ends of twigs. The petals are slender, about 1.5 cm long, and split into two at the end. The calyx is tubular, later becoming hemispherical, and remains in fruiting stage. The fruit is spherical at the end of the receptacle, ripens black, and does not dehisce. It grows in mountains and fields, and is distributed throughout Japan, the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China, and Sakhalin. The name Nanban is thought to come from the unusual shape of its flowers and fruits.

The genus Chickweed consists of only one species and is unique among the Caryophyllaceae family in that it has berry-like fruits.

It is now included in the genus Silene .
