After appearing in supporting roles in plays and films, he studied at the Conservatoire de Paris (National School of Music and Dramatic Art). After graduating, he solidified his popularity by playing the lead role in Camus's Caligula (1945) on stage, and then went on to win the Best Actor Award at the Brussels Film Festival for his role in Les Diables (1947), a film adaptation of Radiguet's novel. He became an international star. From 1951 onwards, he joined the National Popular Theatre (TNP) under the direction of Jean Villar, and devoted himself to the theater, performing in such famous plays as "El Cid," "The Prince of Hamburg," and "Lorenzaccio." He also co-directed with documentarian Joris Ivens the film adaptation of Hauptmann's epic poem "The Adventures of Till Eulenspiegel" (1956).
