1898‐1959
South Korean politician. Born on Ganghwa Island. After serving a year in prison for participating in the March 1st Independence Movement, he traveled to Japan and enrolled at Chuo University but dropped out. In 1925, he was one of the key figures in founding the Korean Communist Party. He was arrested in 1930 and imprisoned for seven years. He was arrested again in 1944 but released when Japan lost the war. He was a pioneer in forming the Incheon People's Committee, but left the Communist Party in 1946. He served as the first Minister of Agriculture and Forestry and Vice Speaker of the National Assembly, but ran for president in 1952 and 1956 in opposition to Syngman Rhee's dictatorship, but was defeated. From 1955 to 1956, he organized the Progressive Party, whose platform was anti-dictatorship, protecting democracy, and peaceful unification of the homeland, and officially founded the party in November 1956.

韓国の政治家。江華島生れ。三･一独立運動に参加し1年間服役後渡日し，中央大学へ入学したが中退。1925年朝鮮共産党創立に中心人物の一人として参加。30年検挙され7年間服役。44年再び逮捕されたが日本の敗戦により出獄。仁川人民委員会結成の先鋒となるが，46年共産党を脱党。初代農林部長官，国会副議長を歴任したが，李承晩の独裁に反対して52,56年と大統領選に出馬したが，落選。55‐56年にかけて，反独裁･民主守護，祖国の平和統一を綱領とする進歩党を組織し，56年11月正式に結党した。
