The capital of Viterbo Province in the Lazio region in central-west Italy. It is located in a hilly area (327m) about 80km north-northwest of Rome. The city was inhabited by Etruscans before the Roman Empire, but became a Papal State in the 11th century and flourished in the 12th century. It is an agricultural distribution center, and the furniture, agricultural machinery, and food industries are active here. It is surrounded by a medieval castle and contains the Basilica of San Pellegrino, a representative example of 13th-century architecture, and the 13th-century Papal Palace, famous as an example of Gothic architecture in the Lazio region.
