…She was born into a wealthy Jewish family in New York, and at the age of 14 she met her husband, Allan Arbus, whom she would marry four years later. As her life story shows, she was troubled by the fact that she had never thought of herself as unhappy. She became a fashion photographer together with her husband, and worked for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, but in 1959 she studied under Lisette Modell, a female photographer who was also a friend of Berenice Abbott, and thereafter began to pursue serious photography. In 1967, she attracted attention with her photographs exhibited at the group exhibition "New Documents" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. …
