A port city in southern Nigeria, West Africa. Population 400,000 (1995). It is located in a marshland about 65 km upstream from the coast on the Bonny River, a branch of the Niger River. It is connected to major cities by rail, road and air. After the railway line to the Enugu coal mining area in the north was opened in 1916, it developed as a port city and became a commercial and industrial city, producing tobacco, cement, aluminum sashes and aluminum doors. Palm oil storage facilities were also established, but more recently it has become the central city of an oil production region and an oil refinery has been built.
