Bessho Umenosuke

A Protestant Methodist pastor and professor at Aoyama Gakuin University. Born in Tokyo. Editor-in-chief of the Methodist journal Gokyo. He devoted himself to creating hymns for Japanese people, and played a leading role in revising and editing many Japanese hymns, including Sanbika (1903), Hymns Vol. 2 (1909), Sanka (1931), and Seinen Hymns (1941). He also worked hard as a committee member in the revised translation of the New Testament in 1917 (Taisho 6). Known for his vast knowledge, his books include Standing in a Corner of Musashino (1915), Thoughts on Animals in the Bible (1920), and Thoughts on Plants in the Bible (1921).

プロテスタント・メソジスト派牧師、青山学院大学教授。東京生まれ。メソジスト系機関誌『護教』主筆。日本人の賛美歌を創造することに心血を注ぎ、『さんびか』(1903)、『讃美歌(さんびか)第二編』(1909)、『讃美歌』(1931)、『青年讃美歌』(1941)など数々の日本語賛美歌の改訂・編集に主導的役割を果たした。また、1917年(大正6)『新約聖書』の改訳にも委員として尽力した。博識をもって知られ、著書に『武蔵野(むさしの)の一角にたちて』(1915)、『聖書動物考』(1920)、『聖書植物考』(1921)などがある。
