Narahara Sanji
1877-1944 An aeronautical engineer from the Meiji to early Showa period.
Born in 1877. Son of Narahara Shigeru. Graduated from Tokyo Imperial University and joined the navy. At the same time, he researched and developed airplanes at his own expense. In 1911, he piloted the Narahara Type 2 at Tokorozawa Airfield in Saitama Prefecture, flying 60 meters from a height of 4 meters, becoming the first Japanese-made airplane to successfully fly. He also devoted himself to training civilian pilots. He passed away on July 14, 1944. He was 68 years old. He was born in Kagoshima Prefecture.

明治10年生まれ。奈良原繁の子。東京帝大を卒業し,海軍にはいる。かたわら自費で飛行機を研究開発。明治44年埼玉県所沢飛行場で奈良原式2号機を操縦し,4mの高さを60mとび,国産機はじめての飛行に成功した。民間操縦士の育成にもつくす。昭和19年7月14日死去。68歳。鹿児島県出身。
