…The wedge-shaped leaves, which grow whorled at the nodes, usually have six leaves, and do not fuse together to form a leaf sheath like horsetails. In the Western flora, it flourished in the Carboniferous period, but in the Cathaysian flora of East Asia, it flourished in the Permian period and became more differentiated, splitting into four genera: Sphenophyllum, which has circular leaves with straight veins ; Parasphenophyllum , which has outward-curving veins; Trizygia , which has three pairs of leaves with straight veins; and Paratrizygia , which has outward-curving veins. In Japan, leaves from the three genera Parasphenophyllum, Trizygia, and Paratrizygia have been reported from the Permian of Maiyama, Miyagi Prefecture. …
