A former town in Tamana District, northwestern Kumamoto Prefecture. It occupies the eastern part of the Kikuchi Plain at the mouth of the Kikuchi River, and has a large area of reclaimed land. It is a rice-growing region, and also produces strawberries, tomatoes, melons, and rushes. Nori seaweed farming is also thriving. In October 2005, it was incorporated into Tamana City along with Tensui Town and Taimei Town in Tamana District. 16.95 km2 . 5,922 people (2003).
