…Blackton also created “Ghost Hotel” in which furniture moves around the room using a one-frame technique, becoming one of the pioneers of “3D animation.” Émile Cohl (1857-1938), a French filmmaker who saw “Amused Faces” and saw through the trick, became head of the trick photography department at France’s largest film company, Gaumont, and filmed moving images of characters with simple designs “like matchsticks” drawn in black ink on blank paper, and projected the negatives to create a white screen on a black background. This was the world’s first “cartoon film,” “Phantasmagorie” (1908), which lasted just one minute and 57 seconds. …
