Elako - Elako

Japanese: エラコ - えらこ
Elako - Elako

It is a marine animal belonging to the order Sedentary, class Polychaeta, and family Scutellaria. It has local names such as Kawakamuri and Mate. It is distributed in northern Japan, where many tubes grow in clusters between the rocks on the coast. The tubes are made of a thin, tough membrane, with fine sand grains on the surface. The body of the insect is about 10 centimeters long, and on its head there is a tuft of gills consisting of 45 to 50 gill filaments, which protrude from the entrance of the tube and open like a flower to breathe and catch food. Each gill filament has 5 to 6 eye spots lined up in a row. The body is well muscular, and is used as fishing bait. Some people eat it raw along the coast of Iwate Prefecture, and it is also sold as salted fish. Near the entrance of the eel's tube, there are many colonies of Ningyohydra, a coelenterate with a body length of about 1 millimeter, and if you touch it, it will swell red.
