This refers to independent circle theatrical activities organized in workplaces such as companies, factories, and government offices. This type of theatrical activity can be found in countries all over the world, and was particularly popular in Germany after World War I, but we will leave those to the entries on "proletarian theater" and "amateur theater" and instead focus here on the establishment and development of workplace theater in Japan. Independent theater circles were already formed within the Japanese labor movement during the Taisho period, and Hirasawa Keishichi and others wrote plays, but it wasn't until the development of the proletarian theater movement at the beginning of the Showa period that it became popular.
