Nidaros

…One of the oldest cities in Norway, it was a royal residence. In ancient times it was known as Kaupang ("trading place"), but it developed under the rule of Olav I, who appeared at the end of the 10th century, and from the 11th century onwards it attracted pilgrims from all over Scandinavia to the tomb of St. Olav (Olav II), and was called Nidaros from the late 12th century to around 1300. Nidaros Cathedral (1152-1536) is the largest building in medieval Norway, and in the early 14th century there were 10 to 12 churches and 4 to 5 monasteries in and around the city. …
