Its body is soft and membranous, and grows to a length of 5 to 15 centimeters. 〘名〙① 綾と錦。※源氏(1001‐14頃)若菜上「御きちゃうよりはじめてここのあやにしきをまぜさせ給はず」② 美しい衣装やぜいたくな衣服。また、紅葉などを形容していう語。綾羅。※宇津保(970‐999頃)俊蔭「故おとどおはしまさましかば、あやにしきにまつはれて、生ひ出でたまはまし」※春夢草(1515‐16)発句「いく村も山は若ばのにしきかな 綾錦など一端二たんをば一むら二村などといへり」③ 紅色藻類。コノハノリ科の海藻。本州中部以南の低潮線あたりから漸深帯の波の静かな岩上などに生える。体は軟かい膜質で長さ五~一五センチメートルになる。形は変化に富むが、円形の葉状で数裂し、先端は網状になる。④ 江戸時代から明治時代頃まで行なわれた女性の髷の形の一つ。
