This urban park is located in the eastern part of Nara city. It covers Mt. Wakakusa, Mt. Mikasa, Mt. Kasuga, and the area around their western foothills. It covers an area of 5.02 square kilometers. In 1880 (Meiji 13), the grounds of Kofuku-ji Temple and the area around Sarusawa Pond were designated as Nara Park based on a decree by the Dajokan (Grand Council of State), and since then it has expanded gradually, becoming a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty in 1922 (Taisho 11), and a prefectural urban park in 1960 (Showa 35) under the Urban Parks Act. The park contains ancient shrines and temples such as Kofuku-ji Temple, Todai-ji Temple, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine, the Nara National Museum, Shosoin, Isui-en Garden, Kasuga Taisha Shrine Garden Manyo Botanical Garden, and the special natural monument Kasugayama Primeval Forest, the nationally designated historic site Uguisuzuka Tomb, Ara-ike Pond, and Sagi-ike Pond. The Kasugayama Primeval Forest is registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the cultural assets of the ancient capital of Nara. The prefectural facilities include a public hall, a sports ground, and a parking lot, and the Kasugayama circular road runs through the area, creating a beautiful harmony between natural and man-made beauty. Over 1,000 deer, a nationally designated natural monument, play in groups on the vast Tobihino and Asajigahara lawns among the cedar groves. [Ichiro Kikuchi] This prefectural urban park opened in 1880 (Meiji 13). Within the park are temples and shrines such as Kofuku-ji Temple, Todai-ji Temple, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine, as well as cultural facilities such as the Nara National Museum and Shoso-in Treasure, and is visited by approximately 13 million tourists annually. The photo shows the area known as Kasugano Park, with Mount Wakakusa visible in the background. The deer, which number more than 1,200, are a nationally designated natural monument.
