Ryobu Shinto

Japanese: 両部神道 - りょうぶしんとう
Ryobu Shinto
A type of Buddhist Shinto. It is also called Ryobu-shugo Shinto or Daishi-ryu Shinto. It is a Shinto theory of syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism that developed by combining with Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. Major examples include Onnare Shinto, Miwa (ryu) Shinto, Tachikawa-ryu Shinto, and Katsuragi Shinto. As a central trend of harmony between Shinto and Buddhism that is unique to Japan, it is a series of religious ideas that have had a great influence on the thoughts and lives of the people since the Middle Ages. It attempts to explain Shinto gods, myths, shrines, and events using the philosophy of Shingon. In other words, it claims that Dainichi Nyorai is the original being, and that the other gods are his manifestations. It claims that Ryobu refers to the Vajrayana realm, which means indestructibility and wisdom, and Dainichi in the Taizo realm, which means growth and reason, and that they are two yet one and the same. Its teachings were passed down through the transmission of Shinto kanjo rites such as the Nihonki kanjo and Reikiki kanjo. Related documents include the "Miwa Daimyojin Engi," "Record of a Pilgrimage to Daijingu" written by Tsukai, and "Deep Commentary on the Forms of the Two Shrines" said to be written by Kukai.
