…Oats usually have no awns on their florets. Similar cultivars include A. nuda L., whose caryopsis separates easily from the caryopsis, and A. strigosa L. (black oat), whose florets have short awns. Oats have good sensitivity to light and are reasonably large, so they are used in the Avena test, an experiment on plant growth substances.
