Kinga Inoue

Japanese:
Kinga Inoue

A Confucian scholar of the mid-Edo period. A member of the Eclectic school. His given name was Tachigen, his pen name was Junkei, and his nickname was Bunpei. Kinga also used the pen names Kohan'o and Ryuto Kanjin. He studied under Miyagawa Yoho of the Jinsai school and Inoue Randai (1705-1761), a member of the Hayashi school who was well versed in ancient commentaries. He eventually criticized the Sorai school that was popular at the time and advocated eclecticism, bringing a breath of fresh air to the world of Confucianism. His theory was that the path of learning is self-study, and he was not bound by existing schools of thought, but instead adopted an eclectic mix of commentaries from the Han and Tang dynasties of China and the ethical theories of the Song and Ming dynasties to establish his family's view. His family occupation was as a doctor in Kasama Domain, Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture), but he left his government service to become a private citizen, and trained many excellent disciples, including Kameda Hosai and Yamamoto Hokuzan. His works include "Kyogi Ogon," "Kyogi Sechu," "Kyousei Roku," "Igaku Bengi," "Shiben," "Yogakusoku," and "Sho Yoko."
