He was well versed in theology as well as Greek philosophy. He was known as Chrysostom (meaning "golden mouth") for his skill in preaching (although this nickname was adopted later). As a hermeneutic scholar, he rejected the metaphorical and speculative interpretations of the Alexandrian school and advocated literal interpretation based on the traditions of the Antiochene school. …
