Nāṣer al‐Din Shāh

The fourth Shah of the Qajar dynasty. Reigned 1848-96. He ascended to the throne in 1848, but Iranian society at the time was in turmoil due to a religious revolt by the Babi people, who called for reform. To put Iran back on track, he appointed Mohammad Taqi Khan as prime minister and had him implement modernization policies in finance, the military, and education. From 1873 onwards, he himself made frequent trips to Europe, endeavoring to absorb advanced cultures. However, after the defeat in the Herat War with Britain in 1856-57 and a series of transfers of interests, beginning with the British Reuter in 1872, Iran became more dependent politically and economically on the European powers.

カージャール朝の第4代シャー。在位1848‐96年。1848年に王位に就いたが，当時のイランの社会は，世直しを訴えるバーブ教徒の宗教反乱で混乱していた。これを立て直すためにモハンマド･タキー･ハーンを宰相に起用，財政，軍事，教育にかかわる近代化政策を実施させた。みずからも73年以降，たびたびヨーロッパ訪問旅行を行い，先進文化の摂取に努めた。しかし，1856‐57年のヘラート問題での対英戦争敗北，72年のイギリス人ロイターに始まる一連の利権譲渡によって，ヨーロッパ諸列強に対する政治的･経済的な従属度を強めた。
