This was the journal of the Aikoku-sha (the national leadership organization for the Freedom and People's Rights Movement). It was first published in March 1880, and renamed Aikoku Shinshi in August of the same year. It was published in Osaka, with funding and editing mainly provided by the Risshisha in Kochi. Edited and written by Ueki Shimori, Nagata Ichiji and others, it advocated basic human rights and popular sovereignty. It made a great contribution to the spread of the idea of Freedom and People's Rights. It was 22 pages long and was published weekly at first, and three times a month from January 1881, before ceasing publication in June of the same year. It was merged with the Kochi Shimbun. 愛国社(自由民権運動の全国的指導組織)の機関誌。1880年3月創刊,同年8月《愛国新誌》と改題。資金,編集ともに高知の立志社が中心となり,大阪で発行。植木枝盛,永田一二らが編集,執筆にあたり,基本的人権や人民主権を主張。自由民権思想の普及に大きく貢献した。四六判22ページからなり,最初は週1回,81年1月からは月3回発行され,同年6月終刊。《高知新聞》に合併された。【大日方 純夫】
