...Tabarestan in the east and Gilan in the west were also sometimes called Dairam in a broad sense, but more accurately, it refers to the region between these two. Due to its rugged terrain, it did not become Islamized even during the Arab conquest, and it was a patriarchal and closed society ruled by a people called kadukhodā. The language was a branch of Persian, and women also worked in agriculture and shepherding.
