Agence Havas (English)

…Agence France-Presse is an abbreviation for Agence France-Presse, which was established in Paris as a semi-official organization based on a government decree on September 30, 1944. It inherits the facilities and traditions of Agence Havas (founded in 1835), the world's oldest modern news agency, which was dissolved and taken over by the government following France's surrender in 1940 during World War II. It was reorganized as a private organization in 1957, but continues to receive subsidies from the government. …

From the News Agency

...The Associated Press in the United States has consistently maintained its operation as a cooperative of newspaper companies, and many news agencies in Japan, including Kyodo News, follow this model.
[History and current situation]
Agence Havas (France, founded in 1835), Wolffs Telegraphen-Bureau (Germany, founded in 1849), and Reuters (England, founded in 1851), which are said to be the forefathers of modern news agencies, initially started out by distributing economic information to customers, and developed in advanced Europe with the development of modern communication technologies such as the telegraph and undersea cables, becoming known as the world's three major news agencies in the second half of the 19th century. These three news agencies concluded their first international agreement in 1856 and began exchanging news.
