American magician. His real name was E. Weiss. He invented the so-called escape magic, in which a person immediately escapes even after being handcuffed and placed in a box, which is then locked and sunk to the bottom of a body of water, and even after being hung upside down from a tall tower wearing a prison suit. He was said to be the greatest magician of the 20th century. Unlike his friend C. Doyle, he had doubts about psychic phenomena and argued that they were all just tricks. 米国の奇術師。本名はE.ワイス。手錠をかけられて箱に入り，箱を鎖錠して水底に沈められても，ただちに脱出する奇術，拘禁服を着て高い塔に逆づりされても抜け出すといった，いわゆるエスケープマジックを創案。20世紀最大の奇術師といわれた。また親交のあったC.ドイルとは逆に，心霊現象に疑義をいだき，すべてトリックだと反論。
