A clan related to the family of the feudal lord of Hizen Saga domain. They are said to be descendants of the Shoni clan of the Fujiwara Hidesato lineage. They rose to prominence in the mid-16th century as vassals of the powerful Ryuzoji clan in Kitakyushu. Nabeshima Naoshige, who served Ryuzoji Takanobu, distinguished himself in battles against the Otomo and Arima clans, and after Takanobu's death in battle in 1584 (Tensho 12), he assisted his son Masaie. On the other hand, through his own friendship with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who expanded his rule to Kyushu, Naoshige was highly valued, including being appointed as the magistrate of Nagasaki, a territory directly controlled by the Toyotomi clan, and during the invasion of Korea, he served as a vanguard alongside Kato Kiyomasa. When Masaie retired in 1590, Naoshige assisted his son Takafusa, and in effect took control of the domain. Furthermore, Naoshige's son Katsushige took over as head of the Ryuzoji clan when it became extinct, and came to rule the Saga domain in both name and reality with a stipend of 357,000 koku. The Ogi domain (73,000 koku), Hasunoike domain (52,000 koku), and Kashima domain (20,000 koku) were divided as branch domains. In the Meiji period, the titles of marquis and branch domains became viscounts.
