A bamboo species of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). A variant resulting from a mutation of Madake. The culms and branches are golden in color, with broad vertical green lines on the side with buds (branches), and the golden and green colors alternate from bottom to top at each node, creating a beautiful pattern. Some leaves have yellow or white vertical stripes. It has long been known as a rare bamboo, and is illustrated in old gardening books. Five locations across the country have been designated natural monuments. However, one of these bamboos in Tsukuda, Akagi-cho, Shibukawa-shi, Gunma Prefecture is different from Kinmei-chiku, and is silvermei-chiku, with green and gold colors alternating at each node.
