Shigatse

Japanese: シガツェ - しがつぇ
Shigatse

A prefecture-level city in the southern part of the Tibet Autonomous Region, China. It is also called Shigatse. It is located near the confluence of the Yarlung Zuangbo River (upstream of the Brahmaputra River) and its tributary, the Nyangchu River. It governs one city district, Gyangtse, Tsemo, and 17 other counties (as of 2016). It is the second largest city in Tibet, with a population of 705,100 (2010). (Pulu) In addition to handicrafts such as ragweed and carpet manufacturing, hydroelectric power plants, machinery, leather, and food processing industries are well developed. In the Nyangchu River Valley, the cultivation of oats and wheat is thriving. In terms of transportation, it is connected to the autonomous region's capital Lhasa by the Lhasa-Shigatse Railway, and there is an air route to Chengdu from Shigatse Peace Airport, about 40 kilometers east of the city center. It developed around Tashilhunpo Monastery, which was built in the 15th century, and has been the residence of Panchen (great monks) since the end of the Ming Dynasty.
