Japanese: ナベコウ(鍋鸛) - ナベコウ（英語表記）black stork

A bird of the Stork family, Ciconiidae, with a total length of about 95 cm. It is slightly smaller than the Oriental white stork, with a white underside below the chest and a metallic greenish black-brown color otherwise. The beak, legs, and area around the eyes are red, and turn bright red especially during the breeding season. It breeds in the subarctic and temperate zones of Eurasia and parts of Africa, and winters mainly in Africa, northern India, and southern China. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird, but in very small numbers. In its wintering grounds, it lives alone in pairs on riverbanks, lakeside, marshes, and rice fields, feeding on fish, frogs, insects, and snails.

コウノトリ目コウノトリ科の鳥。全長約95cm。コウノトリより少し小型で，胸以下の下面は白いが，そのほかは金属緑色を帯びた黒褐色である。くちばしと脚と眼の周囲は赤く，とくに繁殖期には鮮赤色となる。ユーラシア大陸の亜寒帯･温帯とアフリカの一部で繁殖し，主としてアフリカ，インド北部，中国南部などで越冬する。日本には冬鳥として渡来するが，数はきわめて少ない。越冬地では単独かつがいで川岸，湖畔，湿地，水田などにすみ，魚類，カエル，昆虫類，タニシなどを食べている。
