A port city on the southeast coast of Sicily in southern Italy. Its ancient Greek name was Syracuse. It produces wine, olive oil, and salt. It has many ancient Greek and Roman ruins and is also famous as a tourist destination. A Greek colony was founded in 734 BC, and it prospered under the tyrants Gelon and Hiero I in the 5th century BC, and Dionysius I in the 4th century BC, to the point of clashing with Athens. It was captured by Rome in 212 BC, and thereafter shared the same fate as the rest of Sicily.
